What do you do when your client just isn’t getting anywhere? Where do you turn when classic solutions-focused coaching isn’t enough? How do you support someone looking for significant personal growth? Sally Woodward has coached scores of leaders and professionals, helping them break through their barriers and achieve the transitions they want. She offers her clients a clear-eyed view of the costs of transformations and shifts as well as the benefits and helps them build the three elements necessary for change:
Once these are in place, change is possible – though never easy!
No stranger to transition herself, before founding Sherwood PSF Consulting in 1999, Sally Woodward practised as an intellectual property and media lawyer and taught commercial law at Cambridge University. She went on to spend 12 years in a senior management role at leading law firm Freshfields and alongside her ‘day job’, she co-designed and delivered the first specialist MBA for lawyers at Nottingham Law School. Sally has been a coach for over ten years and brings a wealth of knowledge, caring, curiosity and experience to her work. Her idea of a wonderful weekend is to set off with a backpack and walk the wild and beautiful clifftops of Dorset. A besotted mother currently suffering from empty nest syndrome, Sally is a lover of good food and wine and was once a county champion in Latin American Ballroom Dancing!

The opportunity to work with and learn from a world-class String Quartet doesn’t come along very often - this is your chance! Led by Andrew Burke, CEO of the London Sinfonietta, this unique participative workshop will allow you to experience for yourself the understanding that true leadership means you can lead a group even if you don’t personally have the skill in which the group members are experts. It will cover listening and communication; rehearsal and trial-and-error; performance skills – and a taster of conducting! Talented people of all disciplines recognise the power of looking outside their specialism for new learnings: this session will give you new perspectives from the completely different world of music. When the workshop is run with delegates from LBS, the participants have gained deep insights into their own leadership, so your coaching practice may never be quite the same again!
Andrew Burke has been the Chief Executive of the London Sinfonietta since 2007. He launched the London Sinfonietta Academy Programme and its Emerging Artists Programme, to give training and professional experience to brilliant players of the next generation. Under his leadership, the London Sinfonietta won the prestigious RPS Award for best ensemble in 2010. Andrew trained as a business coach with Meyler Campbell and works with both private clients and in a joint programme developed by the London Sinfonietta and the London Business School. He will be joined on the day by a String Quartet of four professional musicians.

‘Oh still small voice of calm’
Quaker poem by John Greenleaf Whittier
Can you hack extreme silence? As coaches we are trained to listen and to be comfortable with pauses and silence. This event takes things to a whole new level. The format is a ‘Meeting for Worship in the manner of Quakers’ (though note that there is absolutely no religious element here). The invitation is to sit for an hour in quiet contemplation and stillness in the silent company of your fellow coaches, to disappear within a circle of warmth and wait to see what comes to you. Your mind may clear; fresh thoughts may arise in the calm; you may relish the peace and the break from the constant ‘doing’ of everyday life, emerging with a rested brain. Conversely you may find it a struggle not to talk, you may fret and fidget. You’ll never know until you try, so if you’d like to experience something totally different, in the unique venue of Friends House, the administrative HQ of the Quakers in England, book your place now and join the Circle of Chairs!
Elizabeth Redfern and Alistair Heslop are both qualified coach-mentors, have PhDs and are former software engineers and business owners. They are also a married couple! Elizabeth and Alistair came to Quakerism over 10 years ago after selling their jointly-owned company and are now committed to helping others run successful businesses. In partnership with organisations like The Prince’s Trust and Unltd, they especially enjoy working with young people. Elizabeth and Alistair are also leading figures in the Quakers and Business Group, which aims to promote Quaker values of truth, equality, simplicity and peace in business and the workplace.

What does it take to coach right at the top of an organisation? CEOs can find themselves in a lonely place, lacking an honest sounding board, critical challenge and the space for strategic long-term planning. Holders of this senior role face unique challenges and demand particular skills of their coach. As CEO of Alexander, a leading provider of senior level coaching and top team development, John Ainley is a seasoned coach and advisor to the CEOs, Managing Partners and Executive Committee members of many of the UK’s largest companies. If you aspire to coach at the top of the corporate ladder, this Fishbowl offers a rare opportunity to see an outstanding CEO coach in action.
